The New York State Department of Health (DOH), Division of Nutrition, Bureau of Supplemental Food Programs, announces the availability of funding to authorize and oversee vendors (retail food stores and pharmacies) who are responsible for the delivery of prescribed, nutritious foods to women, infants and children participating in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). The DOH is seeking applications from agencies to manage the retail food delivery system and WIC vendor management services as Vendor Management Agencies (VMAs).

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Woman, Infants and Children (WIC) is a federally funded program that provides supplemental nutritious foods, participant-centered nutrition assessments and education, breastfeeding promotion and support, and health care referrals to meet the unique nutritional needs of pregnant, breastfeeding or postpartum women, infants, and children up to five years of age who are income eligible. WIC enables families to make lifelong healthy eating and lifestyle choices.

The New York State (NYS) WIC Program currently provides more than $500 million per year in benefits to approximately 500,000 participants. WIC relies on retail food vendors, including grocery stores and pharmacies, as an effective and convenient means for participants to have access to the nutritious foods prescribed for their needs. WIC distributes more than two million food checks monthly, which are redeemed at approximately 4,000 retail food vendors and pharmacies throughout NYS.

The Department of Health is seeking applications from agencies to manage the retail food delivery system and WIC vendor management services as Vendor Management Agencies (VMAs).

Applicants may also apply for optional funding to develop and maintain a statewide website to communicate and share vendor-related information.

Applicants should provide a response to all questions and statements in each section. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all materials to be included in the application have been properly prepared and submitted. The value assigned to each section is an indication of the relative weight that will be given when scoring your application.
